JAMAICA BAY VISION PLAN / FLOYD BENNET FIELD

Io Carydi was appointed to collaborate with Hargreaves Associates (NY and Boston) in the project undertaken by the joined partnership of: HARGREAVES ASSOCIATES, the National Park Service (NPS), the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation and Happold Consulting.

Io Carydi collaborated in the visionary plan for the regeneration of the former military base of Floyd Bennett Field. The area that comprises an estuary includes state and federally owned land forming a ring of natural and engineered terrain circumscribing an intertidal system. The new plan transforms major part of the area into an open park, fully accessible by the communities of South Brooklyn and Queens. The project involved restoration of a wetland in FBF and provision for recovery of the estuary marshy edge that is threatened with erosion. The program of the park involves federal programmatic uses, leisure and recreation areas, camping sites and extensive reforestation besides the reuse of the airfields as linear park strips.
